gates

Swinging barrier doors

Gates are movable barriers controlling passage through walls, fences, or other boundaries.

A gate swings open; a door slides or lifts.

Gates also control flow in other systems: a gate at an airport terminal, a logic gate in electronics, a gate controlling water in a dam.

To gate is to restrict access: The community is gated.

In skiing, gates are pairs of poles marking a course. (Capitalized Gates often refers to Bill Gates.)
