Ottoman
Constantinople's ruling dynasty
Ottoman refers to the Turkish dynasty and empire that ruled much of southeastern Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa from the late 13th century until 1922.
As an adjective, it describes things relating to this empire or its people: Ottoman architecture, the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople.
The furniture term derives from Turkish seating customs. (Lowercase ottoman is a footstool.)
