Hirohito

Hirohito was Emperor of Japan from 1926 to 1989, the longest reign in Japanese history.

His era name was Shōwa, meaning "enlightened peace"—though his reign encompassed Japan's militaristic expansion, World War II, and the country's postwar transformation into an economic power.

His role in wartime decisions remains debated; after Japan's defeat, he renounced claims to divinity and became a constitutional monarch.

In Japan, he is now referred to as Emperor Shōwa.
