apologist

Defends controversial positions

An apologist is someone who argues in defense of a controversial person, idea, or institution.

The word often carries negative connotations—calling someone an apologist implies they're making excuses rather than offering legitimate defense: a corporate apologist, an apologist for the regime.

In religious contexts, an apologist defends the faith through reasoned argument, a practice called apologetics.
