Tito

Belgrade's longtime leader

Tito most commonly refers to Josip Broz Tito (1892–1980), the Yugoslav communist revolutionary who led partisan resistance against Nazi occupation and ruled Yugoslavia as president until his death.

His authoritarian but relatively independent brand of socialism—distinct from Soviet control—kept Yugoslavia's ethnic tensions suppressed, a unity that collapsed after his death.

Tito is also a Spanish and Italian masculine name, and a brand of vodka.
