Manchuria

Japan's 1931 conquest

Manchuria is a historical region in northeastern China, comprising the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang.

The area was home to the Manchu people who conquered China and established the Qing dynasty.

Japan occupied it as the puppet state Manchukuo from 1932 to 1945.

The term remains common in Western usage but is avoided in Chinese contexts, where "Northeast China" is preferred.
