Mao Zedong

Mao Zedong was the revolutionary leader who founded the People's Republic of China in 1949 and ruled it until his death in 1976.

His policies—the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution—caused tens of millions of deaths through famine and political violence.

Maoism remains the official ideology of China's Communist Party, though much modified.

A portrait of Mao still hangs in Tiananmen Square.
