Guadalcanal

Pacific island campaign

Guadalcanal is the largest island in the Solomon Islands chain in the South Pacific.

The name evokes the six-month World War II battle (1942–43) in which American forces defeated Japanese troops in brutal jungle and naval combat—a turning point in the Pacific theater.

My grandfather fought at Guadalcanal.
