Haile Selassie
Haile Selassie was Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, the last in a dynasty claiming descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.
His pre-coronation name, Ras Tafari, gave rise to the Rastafari movement, which regards him as divine or messianic.
He championed African unity and helped establish the Organization of African Unity.
His overthrow by a Marxist military junta ended Ethiopian monarchy.
