Emperor Hirohito
Emperor Hirohito was the 124th Emperor of Japan, reigning from 1926 until his death in 1989—the longest imperial reign in Japanese history.
His era name, Showa ("enlightened peace"), gave its name to the Showa period.
He presided over Japan's militaristic expansion, World War II, and postwar transformation into a constitutional monarchy where the emperor holds ceremonial rather than political power.
Whether Hirohito bore responsibility for wartime atrocities remains historically contested.
