Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) was an Indian political leader who led the movement for independence from British rule through nonviolent civil disobedience.
His methods—boycotts, fasts, peaceful protest—influenced later movements worldwide, including American civil rights.
Mahatma, meaning "great soul" in Sanskrit, was an honorific; his given name was Mohandas.
He was assassinated shortly after India gained independence.
