Slobodan Milošević was the president of Serbia (1989–1997) and of Yugoslavia (1997–2000), whose nationalist policies during the breakup of Yugoslavia fueled wars in Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo.
He became the first sitting head of state indicted for war crimes, charged with genocide and crimes against humanity at The Hague, where he died during trial in 2006.
