reconstruction

Piecing together anew

Reconstruction is the process of rebuilding something that has been damaged or destroyed: reconstruction of the city after the earthquake, knee reconstruction surgery.

It can also mean piecing together information to understand past events: Police worked on a reconstruction of the crime.

The word implies restoring something to a former state or creating a replica based on evidence. (Capitalized Reconstruction is the post-Civil War era in U.S. history.)
