Chesapeake
Atlantic's largest estuary
Chesapeake refers to the Chesapeake Bay, a large estuary on the Atlantic coast of the United States, bordered by Maryland and Virginia.
The name extends to the surrounding region, its watershed, and various place names: Chesapeake blue crabs, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
The word comes from an Algonquian language, likely meaning "great shellfish bay."
