Powhatan

Tidewater indigenous leader

Powhatan refers to a confederation of Algonquian-speaking peoples who inhabited the tidewater region of Virginia when English colonists arrived in 1607.

The name also designates their language and the paramount chief (Wahunsenacah) who led the confederation—father of Pocahontas.

The Powhatan had complex relations with Jamestown settlers, alternating between trade and warfare.

Today Powhatan tribes maintain cultural presence in Virginia.
