headwaters
Where streams begin
Headwaters are the streams and tributaries where a river originates, typically in highlands or mountains.
The term emphasizes source rather than volume—headwaters may be small creeks that eventually merge into a major river: We hiked to the headwaters of the Mississippi.
Also used figuratively for origins: the headwaters of the civil rights movement.
