trotline

Multi-hook line

A trotline is a heavy fishing line strung across a body of water, anchored at both ends, with shorter baited lines hanging from it at intervals.

Unlike rod-and-reel fishing, trotlines work unattended—a fisher sets the line, then returns later to check for catches.

They're used for catfish and other bottom-feeders: We ran the trotline at dawn and pulled up six channel cats.
