Fort McHenry

Baltimore harbor bastion

Fort McHenry is a star-shaped military fortification in Baltimore Harbor, Maryland.

Its successful defense against British naval bombardment in 1814 inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner," which became the U.S. national anthem.

The fort is now a national monument: We visited Fort McHenry on our trip to Baltimore.
