Antietam
Bloodiest American day
Antietam is a creek in Maryland and the site of the bloodiest single-day battle in American history.
The 1862 Civil War engagement between Union and Confederate forces resulted in roughly 23,000 casualties.
The battle checked Robert E.
Lee's first invasion of the North and gave Lincoln the political opening to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
