coastal plain

Low seaside terrain

A coastal plain is a flat, low-lying area of land adjacent to a seacoast, formed by sediment deposited over time as sea levels changed.

These plains typically extend inland from the shore and slope gently toward the water: The Atlantic coastal plain stretches from New Jersey to Florida.

In geology and geography, coastal plains are distinguished from other landforms by their marine sedimentary origins.
