George Washington
George Washington was the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797, and commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
His name attaches to countless places: the capital city, a state, universities, streets in nearly every American town.
Washington crossed the Delaware refers to his famous 1776 attack.
The adjective Washingtonian describes residents of Washington, D.C., or qualities associated with the man himself.
