watermen

Ferrymen and oarsmen

Watermen are men who work on or around water, especially those who operate boats for hire.

Historically, the term referred to ferry operators and bargemen who transported passengers and goods on rivers: The Thames watermen rowed customers across the river.

The word also applies to men skilled in rowing, sailing, or other water-based work.
