Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist born into slavery who escaped and subsequently led dozens of enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad, a network of safe houses and secret routes.
She became known as "Moses" for her role as a conductor on this network, making an estimated thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy people.
During the Civil War she served as a scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army.
Tubman remains an enduring symbol of courage and resistance to oppression in American history.
