inland sea
Enclosed saltwater body
An inland sea is a large body of saltwater entirely or almost entirely enclosed by land, connected to the ocean only by narrow straits.
The Caspian Sea and Mediterranean Sea are classic examples.
The term distinguishes these from true lakes, which are freshwater and fully enclosed, and from open seas.
The region's climate is moderated by the inland sea.
