biplane

Two-winged vintage flyer

A biplane is an aircraft with two sets of wings, one positioned above the other, connected by struts.

This design was standard in early aviation because the dual wings provided greater lift and structural strength than a single wing could achieve with the materials available at the time.

Biplanes dominated military and civilian aviation through World War I and into the 1930s before being largely replaced by monoplanes.

Today they appear mainly in aerobatic displays and crop dusting.
