apron

Cook's protective covering

An apron is a protective garment worn over the front of the body, tied at the waist and sometimes the neck, to shield clothing from spills and stains while cooking or working.

The word extends to any protective or covering surface: the paved area where aircraft park, the strip of stage extending toward the audience, or the skirt around machinery.

To be tied to someone's apron strings is to be overly dependent on them, especially a mother.
