independence
Freedom from control
Independence is the state of being free from outside control or support.
A nation achieves independence when it governs itself rather than being ruled by another power.
A person gains independence when they can support themselves and make their own decisions: She valued her independence too much to move back home.
Financial independence means having enough resources to live without relying on others.
Independence can also mean refusing to be influenced: journalistic independence, judicial independence. (Capitalized Independence often refers to the American holiday or place names.)
