backstage

Behind the curtain

Backstage is the area of a theater hidden from the audience—dressing rooms, wings, and work spaces where performers prepare and crew operates.

As an adverb or adjective, it describes what happens in these spaces: She went backstage to meet the actors.

Figuratively, backstage refers to any behind-the-scenes activity concealed from public view: backstage negotiations, backstage maneuvering.
