monoplane

One-tiered aircraft

A monoplane is an aircraft with a single pair of wings, one on each side of the fuselage.

This distinguishes it from biplanes, which have two stacked wing sets, and triplanes, which have three.

Nearly all modern aircraft are monoplanes: The Cessna 172 is a popular monoplane for training pilots.
