Heaven's high messenger
An archangel is a chief angel, ranking above ordinary angels in celestial hierarchy.
In Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, archangels serve as God's principal messengers and agents: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are the most commonly named.
The archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary.
The term extends figuratively to anyone seen as a divine protector or messenger. (Capitalized Archangel is a Russian port city.)
