pinion

Rack's toothed partner

A pinion is a bird's wing, especially the outer section bearing the flight feathers.

To pinion someone is to restrain them by binding or holding their arms: Guards pinioned him against the wall.

The word also names a small gear that meshes with a larger one, as in rack-and-pinion steering—a different word that settled on the same spelling.
