Covering to conceal
Masking is covering or concealing something.
A mask hides a face; masking hides whatever lies beneath—masking tape protects surfaces from paint, masking in audio suppresses unwanted sounds.
In psychology and neurodiversity contexts, masking describes suppressing natural behaviors to appear more socially acceptable: Autistic masking is exhausting because you're constantly monitoring yourself.
