type

Sort or variety

The general noun type shares some meaning with kind, sort, and category.

It is a handy way of indicating that there are multiple varieties of something: a type of air rifle, data types.

Another group of meanings connected with type are about printed characters—the type in typesetting, typeface, and 24-point type.

The verb type is more frequently associated with those meanings, owing to its earlier association with the typewriter. Type can also mean to assign a type to: We have yet to type these specimens.
