Rh factor
Transfusion compatibility marker
Rh factor is a protein found on the surface of red blood cells.
People who have it are Rh positive; those who lack it are Rh negative.
The distinction matters in blood transfusions and pregnancy—an Rh-negative mother carrying an Rh-positive baby may develop antibodies that attack the fetus's blood cells.
Named for the rhesus monkey, in which it was first identified.
