A
Alphabet's opening letter
A is both the first letter and the first vowel in the Latin alphabet.
It corresponds to the first symbol in the Phoenician alphabet, aleph.
There, it did not represent a vowel (vowels didn’t have symbols), but rather a breathing.
The Greeks, who adopted the Phoenician alphabet, didn’t need a breathing, and instead used it to represent a vowel.
