inscribe

Carve into surface

Inscribe means to write, carve, or engrave words or symbols on a surface, typically one that is durable like stone, metal, or the pages of a book.

The jeweler inscribed their initials on the inside of the ring.

When you inscribe a book, you write a personal dedication in it.

In geometry, to inscribe a figure means to draw it inside another so that their boundaries touch at certain points: inscribe a triangle within a circle.

The word often carries connotations of permanence and formality.
