diacritic

Accent above letter

A diacritic is a mark added to a letter to indicate a change in pronunciation or to distinguish between words.

The accent marks in café, the umlaut in naïve, and the cedilla in façade are diacritics.

English uses them mainly in borrowed words, though they often drop away over time: résumé becomes resume.
