stereotype

Oversimplified group image

A stereotype was originally a plate cast for printing that could be used repeatedly to produce the same image.

From this arises the more common meaning, a simplified, inaccurate, and often negative view of something—an ethnic or religious group, for example—that is held by many people.

If you stereotype someone, you form a preconceived notion about them without actually observing their real qualities.
