platen
Typewriter paper backer
A platen is the flat surface in a printing press that presses paper against the inked type, or the roller in a typewriter that the paper wraps around while being struck by the keys.
The term extends to similar flat pressing surfaces in other machines, such as the glass bed of a flatbed scanner or the platform in a 3D printer where objects are built up layer by layer.
