wedge
Thick-to-thin splitter
A wedge is a piece of material thick at one end and tapering to a thin edge at the other—the shape that lets you split wood, prop open doors, or hold wheels in place.
The shape extends to food: a wedge of cheese, a wedge of lemon.
In golf, a wedge is a high-lofted iron for short shots.
To wedge something is to force it into a tight space: She wedged herself between two passengers.
A wedge can also be something that divides: The issue drove a wedge between them.
