borough

Municipal administrative unit

A borough is an administrative division of a city or town, or in some cases, an incorporated municipality.

New York City's five boroughs—Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island—are the most familiar American example.

In Alaska, boroughs function like counties elsewhere.

British boroughs are towns with special charters or parliamentary representation.
