caucus

Closed political meeting

A caucus is a meeting of members of a political party or faction, typically to select candidates or decide policy.

In American politics, some states hold caucuses instead of primaries to choose presidential nominees—participants gather, debate, and vote in person rather than casting secret ballots.

The word also applies to any bloc that coordinates strategy: the Congressional Black Caucus, the conservative caucus.

As a verb, to caucus is to meet in such a group: Union delegates caucused through the night.
