sectioning

Breaking into parts

Sectioning is dividing something into parts or segments.

In medicine, it refers to cutting thin slices of tissue for microscopic examination.

In British law, sectioning means involuntarily committing someone to a psychiatric hospital under the Mental Health Act: He was sectioned after threatening to harm himself.

The term also applies to technical drawing, where objects are shown as if cut through to reveal internal structure.
