stenography
Rapid note-taking system
Stenography is the practice of writing in shorthand—a system of abbreviated symbols that allows transcription at speaking speed.
Court reporters and legislative transcribers use stenography to create verbatim records.
The term also applies to the specialized keyboards (stenotypes) used in this work.
A stenographer is one who practices the skill.
