papyrus

Pharaoh's writing surface

Papyrus is a tall reed that grows in wetlands along the Nile and elsewhere, and also the writing material ancient Egyptians made from it by pressing strips of the plant's pith together.

By extension, papyrus refers to any ancient manuscript written on such material: The museum acquired a papyrus containing fragments of Homer.

Plural: papyri or papyruses.
