rubric

Assessment scoring framework

A rubric is a set of criteria for evaluating work, especially in education: The grading rubric awards points for thesis, evidence, and clarity.

Originally a rubric was a heading or category in a document—from the red ink used in medieval manuscripts to mark sections.

That sense persists in formal contexts: under the rubric of national security.

A rubric can also mean an established rule or custom: the rubrics of polite conversation.
