epistle

Literary written correspondence

An epistle is a letter, especially a formal or literary one.

The word sounds elevated and is often used with ironic flourish: She sent him a lengthy epistle detailing his faults.

In religious contexts, the Epistles are letters from early Christian leaders preserved in the New Testament, particularly those attributed to Paul.
