reeds

Wetland hollow grasses

Reeds are tall grass-like plants that grow in wetlands and shallow water, their hollow stems swaying in marshes and along riverbanks.

The dried stems have many uses—thatching roofs, weaving baskets, making paper.

In music, a reed is a thin strip of cane or metal that vibrates to produce sound in instruments like clarinets, saxophones, and oboes: She needs to replace her clarinet reed.

Reed instruments are sometimes called simply the reeds.
