gavel

Bench-pounding implement

A gavel is a small wooden mallet used by a presiding officer to call for attention or signal decisions.

Judges use gavels in courtrooms, auctioneers use them to mark sales, and chairpersons use them to maintain order in meetings: The judge banged her gavel and called for silence.

To gavel is to strike with or as if with a gavel: He gaveled the meeting to a close.
