Royalty refers to people of royal rank—kings, queens, princes, and their families.
The word also means the status or power of being royal: She was born into royalty.
In business, a royalty is a payment to an owner for use of their property, typically a percentage of revenue: authors receive royalties on book sales, musicians on recordings, landowners on mineral extraction.
The patent holder collects royalties from manufacturers.
